Omega Seamaster 120 ref. 166.088: when the 120 grew up
A compact Omega diver caught between the restraint of the 1960s and the increasingly purposeful dive watches of the 1970s
Look at the Omega Seamaster 120 ref. 166.088 for a few seconds and one detail begins to dominate the watch: the blue seconds hand. It cuts across a dark dial surrounded by a broad rotating bezel, while the white hour and minute hands do the practical work of telling the time. It is a small piece of colour on an otherwise serious sports watch, but it gives the reference much of its personality.
The timing of the watch is just as interesting. The ref. 166.088 appeared in 1969, only a few years after the first Seamaster 120 models, yet its proportions and construction already point towards the much more assertive Omega dive watches of the decade that followed.
That makes the 166.088 more than simply another vintage Seamaster. It captures a transition. The relatively compact Omega diver of the mid-1960s was becoming broader, tougher-looking and more visually distinctive, but had not yet reached the uncompromising proportions of watches such as the Seamaster 600 Ploprof.
This is the Seamaster 120 growing up.
Before Seamaster meant diving
The Seamaster name is so closely associated with diving today that it is easy to forget how differently the collection began.
When Omega introduced the Seamaster in 1948, it was conceived as a durable everyday wristwatch rather than a specialist diving instrument. The transformation came later. In 1957, Omega introduced the Seamaster 300 CK2913 as part of the famous trio that also included the Speedmaster and Railmaster, giving the Seamaster family a dedicated professional diving branch.
That distinction is important because it explains why vintage Seamaster watches can look so different from one another. A slim, almost dress-like Seamaster and a substantial professional diver are not contradictions within the same collection. They represent different interpretations of the same underlying idea of robustness and reliability.
The Seamaster 120 entered this developing story in 1966. The first generation was smaller and more restrained, with cases of roughly 37 mm and several manual-wind and automatic configurations, with and without a date. Compared with Omega’s larger professional divers, these watches offered genuine sporting intent in dimensions that remained close to those of a conventional wristwatch.
Only a few years later, reference 166.088 changed the character considerably.
The Omega Seamaster 120 ref. 166.088 arrives
Introduced in 1969, the Omega Seamaster 120 ref. 166.088 measures around 39 to 40 mm across in documented examples, with a 20 mm lug width and a case thickness of approximately 11 mm. Those dimensions sound restrained today, but the numbers alone do not explain how different the watch feels from the earlier Seamaster 120.
The case spreads outward around the dial in broad surfaces, while the short lugs are almost absorbed into the body. The rotating bezel becomes a much stronger visual component, and the relationship between bezel, dial and case feels more integrated.
Compared with the previous generation, the 166.088 looks less like a conventional wristwatch adapted for diving and more like an object whose complete shape has been developed around its sporting purpose.
That is an important distinction. The transition from 1960s watch design into the 1970s was not simply a matter of increasing diameter. Cases became broader, lugs were increasingly incorporated into the overall form, and bezels began to play a much greater visual role.
The 166.088 arrived in 1969, but visually it was already looking towards the decade ahead.
An EPSA case without borrowing somebody else’s legend
Another intriguing name is connected with the watch: Ervin Piquerez S.A., better known to collectors as EPSA.
Documented examples of the Seamaster 120 ref. 166.088 use a two-piece stainless-steel case manufactured by EPSA, one of Switzerland’s important specialist producers of waterproof watch cases. Today, the company is particularly famous for the Super Compressor system used by numerous Swiss manufacturers.
That association needs to be handled carefully.
An EPSA-made case is not automatically a Super Compressor case, and there is no reason to attach that description to the 166.088 merely because the same manufacturer was involved. The genuine connection is interesting enough. Omega was using a case produced by a company with considerable expertise in the construction of watches intended to operate around water.
It is also a reminder of how the Swiss watch industry worked during this period. Even major manufacturers regularly relied on specialist suppliers for cases, dials, bracelets and other components. The name printed on the dial was only one part of a much larger network of expertise.
On the 166.088, EPSA helped give the Seamaster 120 the broad, compact architecture that separates it immediately from its predecessors.
The blue hand that collectors remember
For all the engineering behind the watch, the element most likely to be remembered is probably the simplest.
The ref. 166.088 combines a dark dial with strongly contrasting hour and minute hands and a bright blue central seconds hand. Documented examples also show blue rotating bezels, many of which have changed considerably in colour after decades of exposure and use.
The colour works because Omega used so little of it. The blue seconds hand moves continuously against the dark dial and creates a focal point without disturbing legibility. What could otherwise have been a rather severe black-and-white instrument gains personality from one small decision.
Collectors notice this too. Discussions among owners of the reference regularly return to the blue hand, the compact case and the straightforward legibility as some of the characteristics that make the 166.088 appealing.
That observation is useful because technical specifications only explain part of a watch. They tell us what it contains and how it was constructed. Small design decisions often explain why somebody remembers it.
Calibre 1002 and a much more extreme relative
Inside the ref. 166.088 is Omega’s automatic calibre 1002, paired with a date indication at three o’clock.
The movement belongs to the generation Omega introduced as the 1960s gave way to the 1970s. Operating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and equipped with a quick-set date, it represented a more modern technical direction than the movements found in the earliest Seamaster 120 references.
Its most interesting characteristic, however, may be the company it kept.
Omega also used calibre 1002 in the original Seamaster 600 Ploprof, one of the most uncompromising professional diving watches the company ever produced.
Place the two watches beside one another and the contrast is remarkable. The Ploprof surrounds its movement with an enormous asymmetric case, specialist bezel construction and heavily protected crown. It was conceived as serious underwater equipment rather than simply as a wristwatch capable of being taken into the water.
The 166.088 takes essentially the same calibre and places it inside a watch of around 40 mm that remains entirely plausible for ordinary daily wear.
That comparison tells us something important about tool watches. The movement alone does not determine how specialised a watch becomes. The case, controls, water protection, visibility and ergonomics shape the character of the finished object just as strongly.
In the Ploprof, calibre 1002 lives inside one of Omega’s most extreme designs.
In the Seamaster 120 ref. 166.088, it lives inside something far more restrained.
The two watches belong to the same period, but they answer very different questions.
A vintage diver wears its history on the outside
Vintage dive watches tend to reveal their lives more visibly than dress watches.
Bezels are exposed to knocks and sunlight. Luminous material changes colour. Cases accumulate scratches and may be polished during servicing. Crowns, crystals and hands can be replaced as watches are maintained over decades.
The ref. 166.088 is a particularly good example of why condition should be judged as a whole rather than reduced to whether a watch looks clean.
Collectors familiar with the reference regularly discuss worn or damaged bezels, while some examples develop cracking in the dial surface, producing the pattern commonly described as a spider dial.
But ageing is not automatically damage, just as a clean-looking component is not automatically desirable.
A faded bezel can contribute enormous character when its ageing belongs naturally with the rest of the watch. Patinated luminous material can strengthen the visual balance when the hands and hour markers have aged together. Conversely, a heavily polished case or one unexpectedly bright replacement component can disturb the relationship between all the other parts.
This is why originality and harmony matter so much with vintage sports watches. Two examples of exactly the same reference can share identical specifications and still feel completely different.
On a Seamaster 120 ref. 166.088, more than half a century of ageing does not necessarily need to be erased.
It needs to make sense.
About this watch
The ChronoMasters example is currently recorded as an Omega Seamaster 120 ref. 166.088 dating from 1970, housed in stainless steel and powered by Omega calibre 1002.
Visually, much of its appeal comes from the relationship between the dark dial, aged rotating bezel and characteristic blue central seconds hand. The broad case retains the proportions that give this generation of Seamaster 120 its distinctive late-1960s and early-1970s character.
There is a pleasing coherence to the way this example presents itself. The bezel shows its age rather than appearing unnaturally fresh, while the dial and surrounding components have developed the kind of vintage character that suits a sports watch of this period.
For this Master Edition 0.5, however, we deliberately stop short of making stronger claims than the information currently allows.
The stated 1970 production date is the date currently associated with the watch rather than one we have independently confirmed through the movement serial number or an Omega archival record. Likewise, the originality of individual components such as the dial, hands, crown, crystal and bezel will be reassessed once the watch can be examined in greater detail.
The bezel deserves particular attention when that inspection becomes possible. The current product information describes it as unidirectional, while documented examples of the ref. 166.088 have been described with a bi-directional rotating bezel. Until the physical watch can be checked, simply describing it as a rotating bezel is the safest and most accurate approach.
The same caution applies to water resistance. Whatever level of protection the model possessed when new, a vintage diving watch should never be assumed to retain its historical rating without appropriate testing.
Those remaining questions do not prevent us from appreciating what the watch already reveals. This is the Seamaster 120 at a particularly interesting point in its development: more substantial and expressive than the first generation, yet far less extreme than the specialised professional diving instruments Omega was developing at almost exactly the same moment.
Closing thoughts
It is tempting to judge vintage dive watches by how extreme they eventually became. Greater depth ratings, larger cases and increasingly specialised equipment naturally produce dramatic stories.
The Omega Seamaster 120 ref. 166.088 is interesting for almost the opposite reason.
Introduced in 1969, it catches Omega halfway through a transformation. The restrained Seamaster 120 of the mid-1960s had gained a broader EPSA-made case, a stronger bezel and a newer generation of automatic movement. The design had become unmistakably more purposeful, yet it remained compact enough to function as an ordinary wristwatch.
Then Omega took essentially the same calibre and placed it inside the Ploprof.
Seen together, the two watches reveal how many directions the company was exploring at once. One became an uncompromising piece of professional diving equipment. The other stopped at a point where utility, proportion and character remained in unusually good balance.
Perhaps that is why the blue seconds hand matters so much. It reminds us that this was never merely a smaller professional diver. Omega allowed the Seamaster 120 ref. 166.088 to have a personality of its own.
The Seamaster 120 had grown up.
It simply stopped before growing enormous.
